G-Class (W463) 1990-2020 Production Models
In
1990, Mercedes-Benz offered the new W463 models (designated G-Class)
which where significantly revised from their predecessor
W461 that was ending production, as the 463 began.
They came equipped with anti-lock brakes, full-time 4WD and electric
locking differentials. The interior was upgraded with wooden accents
and optional leather upholstery.
For
1992, the civilian models began to offer features like cruise control
and Burl Walnut wood interior trim. All 463 G-Wagens began using the
letter-first (G-Class) naming scheme in 1994.
In 1997 a power-topped convertible was introduced along with two new engines, the 2.9 L Turbo Diesel and the V6 M112 G 320. Prior G 320's used the M104 I6 engine.
In 1998, the G 500 was introduced, and a limited run of 20th anniversary special edition G-500's were produced in 1999. The 1998 V8 G 500 G-Wagen sales launched a bit later in the United States with 2002 models. The 354 hp G 55 AMG became a vehicle of choice in the American Market for celebrities and the affluent public.
The 463 line featured a larger range of engines choices, including the first V8-powered 500 GE luxury model with a M117 engine and four-speed automatic transmission. W463 Variants
