Series (W461) 1981-2001 Production Models
The Mercedes 461 Series was designated as a military and parapublic service model.
The Series 461 G-Class was developed as a military vehicle from a suggestion by the King of Iran (at the time a significant Mercedes shareholder), and offered as a civilian version in 1979. The first military in the world to use it was the Argentine Army beginning in 1981 with the military model 461.
The Royal Netherlands Army uses various versions of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, mostly 461 290GD and 290GD TD models with a manual gearbox. The G-Class has been sold under the Puch name in certain markets, and the Peugeot P4 models had their own designations which were variants made under license, with Peugeot engines and parts.
Since the classic W461 ended production in 2001, military, parapublic service, and utility versions are also based on the W463 driveline. Sometimes, the W461 designation is still used for these.
