OM603 Engine Technical Data
The OM603 was a straight-6 diesel motor that was an engineering triumph in pre-chamber design, and a technological leap forward from the earlier 5 cylinder OM617. It produced 148 hp at 4600 rpm with torque of 195 ft.lb at 2400 rpm (euro market without catalytic converter) and had a cylinder bore of 87 mm (3.43 in) with piston stroke of 84 mm (3.31 in) and a compression ratio of 22.0:1. Cylinder block material is cast iron with cylinder heads made of aluminum, and the SOHC valvetrain had 2 Valves per cylinder.
Versions 603.96x and 603.97x were turbocharged, and only turbocharged models of the 603 series were available to the U.S. market. The single camshaft and injection pump are driven by duplex chain from the crankshaft. A separate single row chain drives the oil pump. The camshaft operated the valves via hydraulic bucket tappets, with automatic valve clearance adjustment.
