Mercedes Benz Unimog Production: 1948/1951-On

Mercedes Unimog Production Models

The Mercedes Benz Unimog is a range of multi-purpose all-wheel drive trucks produced by Daimler AG (formerly Daimler-Benz) and sold under the Mercedes-Benz brand. Unimog production started in 1948 at Boehringer in Göppingen. Daimler-Benz took over manufacturing of the Unimog in 1951, and where produced it in the Mercedes-Benz Gaggenau plant.

Over the years, Unimogs were also built or assembled in Aksaray Turkey, Argentina (the first ever country to do so outside Germany) under license from 1968 until 1983, with extra units built until 1991 in the González Catán factory near the city of Buenos Aires. Since 2002, Unimog vehicles have been built in the Mercedes-Benz truck plant in Wörth am Rhein Germany.

Unimog Model Series By Date of Introduction

The Unimog Species Evolution

It's easy to consider the Unimog to be some kind of animal with the military Unimog S being the first Unimog designed to be an off-road truck rather than a tractor. Starting in the mid 1950's, Daimler-Benz was manufacturing the Unimog S in light, medium and heavy series before successively reducing available models during the 1990's to modern implement carrier operations or heavy long wheelbases all-terrain cargo carries.

Unimogs belonging to the medium series were the 403, 413, 406, 416, 426, and 419 which offered three wheelbases (2,380 mm, 2,900 mm, 3,400 mm) and two engines, the OM 314 straight-four and OM 352 straight-six direct injected diesel engines.

The heavy series Unimogs were introduced in 1974 with the first heavy series Unimog 425 with a wheelbase of 2,810 mm. Next came the 435 with 3,250 mm, 3,700 mm and 3,850 mm wheelbases, and 424 with 2,650 mm and 3,250 mm wheelbases.

With the introduction of new engines begining in 1986, the 424 became 427 and both 425 and 435 were joined becoming the 437. A 437-series derivative 437.4-series is still in production.

In 1988 new 407 and 417 series replaced all Unimog 406-related series. In 1992 the 407 and 417 were replaced with the 408 and 418 series. In 2000, the 408 and 418 were replaced with the current 405 implement carrier series, making the 437 and the 405 the only remaining Unimog series currently in production.

Unimog Design Characteristics

The Unimogs design element is its chassis, a flexible ladder frame with short overhangs, and coil sprung beam portal axles with central torque tube and transverse links. Portal axles put tire centers below axle centre adding high ground clearance without big tires. Coil sprung axles with torque tubes allow axle angle offset up to 30° giving tires a wide range of vertical movement over uneven terrain and boulders.

Unimog's are equipped with high visibility driving cabs enabling operators to see the terrain and easily manipulate mounted tools.

Due to their off-road capabilities, Unimogs can be found in jungles, mountains and deserts used as armored military vehicles,  army personnel or equipment carriers, fire fighter vehicles, expedition campers, snowplows, municipal equipment carriers, agricultural implements, forest ranger vehicles, construction equipment, off road–rail vehicles, and even in competitions like truck trials and Dakar Rally rally raids.

New Unimog's can be purchased in one of two current series:

• Medium series 405, also known as the UGN (equipment carriers)
• Heavy series 437, also known as the UHN (highly mobile cross country)
