Type 220 (W124) 1985-1996 Production Models
The
Mercedes 124 Series included the W124 Saloon, S124 Estate, C124 Coupe,
A124 Cabriolet, V124 Limousine, F124 Rolling Chassis and VF124 long-wheelbase
rolling chassis. It was designed as a mid-sized vehicle platform that
sold in North America from 1985 through 1996.

The
124 Series started replacing the W123 series models
in 1984 with the Coupe variant being introduced at the Geneva Motor
Show in 1987.
Mercedes-Benz introduced their S124 Estate Wagon in 1987 (1987-1996) which received a warm reception from an intrigued public. The Mercedes-Benz S124 was the first Mercedes wagon to be officially titled as an E-Class. Mercedes didn't officially dub vehicles as E-Class until 1993
With
more than 2.5 million built, car enthusiasts respect the 124 as a car
that can sell for relatively reasonable prices, and often considered
one of the most successful series Mercedes ever produced.
History shows that if well-maintained, these 124's have been known to patronize the roads endlessly, running into the hundreds of thousands of miles. One-million-mile cars? W124 diesels have been known to last for more than two million miles.
The W124 long wheelbase saloon was targeted for taxi companies, but more often the luxury equipped versions where also used as limousines.
The 124 series was being phased out by 1996 with its successors the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W210) (saloon/estate) and (coupé/convertible) C208 CLK-Class, ending its 11 year production run.
