OM617 Diesel Engine Technical Data
The OM 617 was used in vehicles from the 1970s to early 1990s. It is a direct development from the Mercedes OM616 straight-4 motor.
North American versions had ADA device equipped pumps which limited fuel at high altitudes to prevent smoke in less dense air. Engine blocks after the .910 variant had rear mounted oil filter housings with a combined full flow and bypass filter element. In August 1978 the pre-combustion chamber was updated for more efficient combustion. The engine capacity of 3.0 L with 90.9 mm 3.58" bore met European displacement laws.
In September 1979 the OM617 was fitted with a new camshaft offering greater valve lift enabling air and exhaust gases to have less resistance. Power output rose to 88 PS (65 kW; 87 hp) with torque remaining at 172 Nm (127 lb.ft) @ 2400 rpm. In November 1980 the MW style injection pump was replaced with the M type for non-North American engines. Engines were equipped with series wired loop type glow plugs up until 1980 when replaced by the pencil type plugs (already used in the OM617A since 1978).
The OM617 became a popular choice for the use of alternative fuels (mainly straight or waste vegetable oil and biodiesel).

OM617A Turbocharged
1976 saw the turbocharger added to produce 187 hp which was fitted to the C111-IID test vehicle. In 1978 the engine was upgraded again to 227 hp and installed in the C111-IIID. Modifications for production engines included oil spray to cool the underside of pistons; pistons with oil passages; stronger connecting rods; sodium filled valve stems, a stronger nitride-hardened crankshaft and a upgraded oil pump with separate chain drive for extra turbocharger lubrication.
OM617.950
In 1978, the OM617.950 was fitted in the W116 for the North American market-only 300SD, the first production turbodiesel sedan. Power originally was 109 hp @ 4200 rpm, torque 168 lb.ft @ 2400 rpm. From October 1979 - 119 hp @ 4350 rpm, torque 170 lb.ft @ 2400 rpm.
Applications:
