Series (W201) 1982-1993 Production Models
The
Mercedes-Benz W201 Series were manufactured from 1982-1993, and was
the first compact executive car line manufactured by Mercedes-Benz.
Introduced in 1982, it was positioned in the size category below the E-Class and marketed under variants of the Mercedes-Benz 190 nameplate.
The W201 enjoyed strong sales in Europe, but modest sales in the United States.
The
190 featured innovative rear 5-link suspension, subsequently used in
E and C class models, front and rear anti-roll bars, anti-dive and anti-squat
geometry—as well as airbags, ABS brakes and seatbelt pretension.
Production models included 190 | 190E | 190E 2.0 | 190E 2.3 | 190E 2.3-16 | 190E 2.5-16, Evolution I, Evolution II | 190E 2.6 | 190E 1.8 | 190D | 190D 2.2 | 190D 2.5 | 190D 2.5 Turbo. The 190D and 190E.
In 1993, for the U.S. market, 2 LE models were offered, limited to 1,400 units (700 190 E 2.3 LE and 700 190 E 2.6 LE)
The W201 Series production ended on April 13 1993 after the manufactured toll of approximately 1.8 million vehicles. Its successor, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W202) followed beginning in 1993 and running through 2000.

The 190 E 2.3-16 was a partnership with engineering firm Cosworth who took the standard 2.3-liter 8-valve engine and fitted a light alloy cylinder head, dual-overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. In 1988 engine displacement increased to 2.5 liters.
