Series (W111) 1959-1971 Production Models

The Mercedes-Benz W111 Series was a chassis code given to a range of Mercedes vehicles produced between 1959 and 1971 which housed inline-6 engines, with the 280SE 3.5's having a V8.

The W111 models included the 220b, 230S, 220Sb, and 220SEb four-door sedans (1959-1968), and the 220SEb, 250SE, 280SE, 280SE 3.5 two-door coupes and cabriolets (1960 to 1971).

The W111 series shared a chassis and body with the W110 and W112 series, and these Sedan models shared the Heckflosse nickname - German for the “fintail” style quarter panel trunk wings.

The 220b, 230S and 230Sb sedans all housed different variants of the M180 engine. The 220SEb sedans, coupe's and cabriolet's all housed variants of the M127 engine. The 250SE coupe and cabriolet housed the M129 engine. The 280SE coupe and cabriolet housed the M130 engine, and the 280SE 3.5 coupe and cabriolet housed the M116 engine.

The 220b, 220Sb, and 220SEb replaced the (W105) 219, the (W180) 220S and the (W128) 220SE. In May 1965, the 220Sb and 220SEb were replaced by the new 230S. In November 1967 the 250 SE models where superseded by the 280 SE coupe and cabriolet's, with the 280SE 3.5 models being added to the line in 1969, completing the W111 series.
