OM404 Technical Data
The Mercedes-Benz OM 404 A, LA is a V12 12-cylinder with a piston
stroke of 142 mm. The 12-cylinder engine was also offered as a turbocharged
option.
The 12-cylinder engine was not used in regular Mercedes or MAN trucks,
but only in special vehicles (e.g. heavy-duty tractors). Due to its
greater length, it was the only one that did not fit completely under
the driver's cab, but instead stuck out at the back. With modified peripheral
equipment, all engines were also offered as built-in engines, ship drives,
locomotive drives, or as small power plants and similar purposes.
These 400 series motors were developed jointly by Daimler-Benz and MAN beginning in the 1960s and built jointly for more than 20 years, while maintaining company specifics such as different combustion processes. The aim was to use the cooperation of both manufacturers to share expensive basic elements (such as engine blocks, in-line injection pump, crankshafts and flywheels). The engines were practically identical in construction down to below the cylinder head gasket, pistons and (individual) cylinder heads were manufacturer-specific with direct injection for Mercedes. The main area of application was heavy trucks.
The engine series OM 401 V6, OM 402 V8, OM 403 V10 and OM 404 V12 complete the 400 series of diesel engines with 6 to 12 cylinders in V-arrangement.
