OM403 Technical Data
The Mercedes-Benz OM 403 VA, A is a V10 Compression-Ignition, Direct-Injection Multifuel Engine. The OM 403 VA development was a result of the military demand for a multifuel engine based on and sharing a maximum number of parts for a mass-produced commercial vehicle engine.
The path of development encountered many problems and setbacks, but eventually lead to the standard production of the 403 engine. The results achieved are significant in regards to the expected deterioration in the ignition quality of conventional diesel fuels, and due to the future needs to use alternative fuels of very poor ignition quality.
It was jointly developed by Daimler-Benz and MAN in the mid 1970s while preserving individual company specifics such as different combustion processes.
The engine series OM 401 V6, OM 402 V8, OM 403 V10 and OM 404 V12 complete the 400 series of diesel engines with 6 to 12 cylinders in V-arrangement.
