Type 300S 300Sc (W188) 1951-1958 Production Models

The Mercedes-Benz W188 Series debuted in October 1951, when Daimler-Benz launched the 300S at the Paris Motor Show. These were the most expensive and exclusive two-door luxury hand-built sports automobiles of the time. They were produced between 1951-1954 with its successor 300Sc produced between 1955-1958.

The Mercedes-Benz 300S (W188) was introduced at the Paris Salon in October 1951. It was available as a 2-seat roadster, a 2+2 coupe, and a cabriolet with landau bars, (officially Cabriolet A).

The 300S was fitted with the M188 engine, a high-performance version of the M186 3.0 liter motor. After minor engine adjustments in 1952, the W188 went through a mid-life facelift in 1955 gaining the 300Sc status with several enhancements including a rear "low-pivot" independent suspension and a mechanical direct fuel injected M199.980 straight-6 engine, boosting output to 173hp at 5400 rpm. Only a pair of chrome strips on either side of the hood visually distinguished it from the 300S.

These vehicles shared many 300 SL "Gullwing" innovations and mechanical components including engine, suspension, and chassis.

The Mercedes 300S models offered a notable enhancement from its predecessor with a 30 percent increase in horsepower from 115 to 150, and a remarkable top speed of 110 mph.

Unique and classic new features included a wraparound windshield, graceful wing lines, and curved rear body lines with no-glare mirrors, reclining seats, windshield washers, vacuum-assisted brakes and backup lights. With three new sporty bodies on a 25-centimetre shorter chassis, the coupe, cabriolet, and roadster also featured lavish interiors with supple leather, glossy burled walnut trim, chrome-accented dash instruments with elegant switches and controls made like high end jewelry adding to their lavish elegance.
