M188 Engine Technical Data
The Mercedes-Benz M188 engine is a overhead cam inline 6-cyclinder motor fed by triple downdraft Solex carburetors that produces 150 hp at 5000 rpm with 170 lb/ft of torque at 3800 rpm, with a 2,996cc displacement, and a 7.8:1 compression ratio. It was produced from 1951 to 1957 for use in the Mercedes Series W188 Type 300S which weighed in at 3,800 lbs. Performance of the M188 engine in the 300S was enhanced by a 4-speed manual transmission pushing acceleration from 0-62 mph in 15 seconds with a top speed of 109 mph
The Mercedes 300S (W188) that housed the M188 engine was a two-door luxury sports tourer produced between 1951 and 1958 in coupe, roadster and cabriolet body styles. Its successor the 300 Sc (W188) appeared in 1955 featuring an upgraded M199 engine.
Mercedes M188 Petrol Engine Features
The Mercedes-Benz M188 (or Daimler-Benz M188) was produced from 1951 to 1957 by the German car manufacturer Daimler-Benz..
The M188 motor was a variant of the M186 engine, and maintains several of its main features, including:
- 6 cylinders in line architecture
- cast iron type engine mono-block
- aluminum alloy head
- bore and stroke: 85x88 mm
- displacement: 2996 cc
- fuel distribution with overhead cams
- two valves per cylinder
- crankshaft on 7 bench supports
The main difference with the M188 is the carburetion with 3 Solex 40PBJC carburetors. It has a compression ratio of 7.8: 1, which is higher due to variation from the M186 engine.
This M188 engine made its debut in September 1951, shortly after the introduction of the M186 engine from which it was derived. The natural evolution of the M188 engine was succeeded by the M199 engine being an injection variant of the M188 motor.
