Type 300 (W186) 1951-1957 Production Models
The
Mercedes-Benz W 186 series Type 300 was introduced in April 1951 at
the first Frankfurt International Motor Show along with the the
187 220 model. The Daimler-Benz 300 was considered
to be the larges and most powerful series in production at that time.
Produced between 1951 and 1957, it was Mercedes most prestigious four-door
luxury tourer of its time, elegant, exclusive and as expected, quite
expensive.
The Mercedes-Benz W186 Type 300 vehicles were available in three versions, including:
- Series W186 Model 300 a (or just 300)
- Series W186 Model 300 b
- Series W186 Model 300 c
There was no "a" designation initially, only being added later along with the "b" and "c", by enthusiasts for the purpose of distinguishing between the three W186 generations.
These three generations of W186 Type 300 vehicles were produced in succession (300a W 186 II), (300b W 186 III) and 300c (W 186 IV), with the 300c production models including 62 long wheel base versions.
Available
as both a saloon and cabriolet body configurations, they offered an
all new 3.0 L (2996 cc/182 in³)
M186 straight-6 engine that included twin downdraft Solex carburetors,
overhead cam and aluminum head with oversized intake and exhaust valves.
These feature allowed these engines to produce 113 hp at a 6.4:1 compression
ratio which where coupled to a 4-speed synchromesh manual gearbox transmission.
Custom features and options included glass dividing partitions, VHF mobile telephone, dictation machine, writing desks, sirens, curtains, sunroofs, a half-roof "landaulet", higher horsepower and a final drive options along with a 3-speed Borg-Warner automatic transmission,.
Engine, suspension, and X-frame chassis design innovations and technical advancements were shared with the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL "Gullwing".

An enlarged "300d" variant built on the W189 chassis succeeded the W186 in late 1957.
