Series (W189) 1957-1962 Production Models
The Mercedes-Benz W189 model 300d was a four-door luxury tourer produced between 1957 and 1962. The W189 Type 300d was introduced in August 1957 as the enlarged successor to Mercedes' flagship W186 series 300c.
The W189 chassis reflected sweeping refinements that included modernized bodywork, pioneering fuel injection, and a unique hardtop configuration transforming it into a pillar-less phaeton.
Available
as both a saloon and cabriolet, it was fitted with a more powerful version
of the M186, the M189 straight-6 engine, which including Bosch mechanical
direct injection and innovative diagonal head-to-block joint allowing
for oversized intake and exhaust valves. Output was an even horsepower
per cubic inch, 178 hp at 5500 rpm.
The M189 engine was designed for prolonged service under hard use and featured deep water jackets, thermostatically controlled oil cooling, copper-lead bearings and a hardened crankshaft.
The 300d M189 engine was coupled to a 3-speed Borg-Warner automatic transmission and could sustain anything up to its maximum speed all day.
An additional 4 inches of wheelbase provided greater rear legroom, and removable rear quarter lights allowed unobstructed views from the front vent window on back, valued in the model's common "parade car" role.

A total of 3,077 300d models were produced through March 1962, along with 65 special-order 300d-based Cabriolets. The W189 300d flagship limousine was ultimately replaced in 1963 by the W100 600 pullman "Grand Mercedes".
