Type 220 (W187) 1951-1955 Production Models

The Mercedes-Benz W187 220 was produced after World War II when Daimler had limited resources for product development. The creation was the result of fitting a modern engine into an outdated 170 S model. The chassis and body looked almost identical to the W136 170 aside from adding duplex front brakes, and having the headlights integrated into the front fenders in order to accommodate the larger more powerful M180 2.2-liter engine.

The W187 was unveiled April 1951 along side the W186 Type 300 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show sporting the new M180 6-cylinder overhead cam engine.

These Mercedes-Benz W187 Type 220 vehicles were available in several variants including:

W187 220 Sedan/Saloon
W187 220 Coupe
W187 220 Cabriolet A
W187 220 Cabriolet B
W187 220 Open Tourer

Additionally, In October 1952 eight ambulance vehicles were produced between August 1952 and May 1953, 41 special W187 soft open top police cars "OTP" were produced, and between October 1952 and July 1954, and 30+ custom 220 police cars were built by custom body maker Binz in Lorch.

The two convertible models were produced in limited quantities including:

278 of the Cabriolet "A" (2-door, 2/3-seat)
997 of the Cabriolet "B" (2-door, 4-seat)

The W187 coupe was the most exclusive of the 187 series with only 85 of these vehicles sold which were based on the "Cabriolet A" platform.

In ealy 1954, with manufacturing of the 187 sedan/saloon body cars soon being discontinued, the "Cabriolet A" and its Coupe derivative were fitted with the new higher compression M180.II (M180.921) 85 PS / 83.8 HP motor - which was the engine developed for the soon to be announced Mercedes-Benz W180 model 220a.

These faster sportier M180.II versions of the W187 continued in production for another year.

The W187 220 saloon was replaced by the W105 and W180 line in 1953-1954.

The Coupé and Cabriolet "A" continued production until July and August 1955.
