Series (W120) 1953-1962 Production Models
The
Mercedes-Benz W120 Series line was first introduced in 1953 with the
first two variants, the 180 M136 52hp petrol and 180D OM636 40hp diesel
engine models. In 1957 the 180a succeeded the 180 with a M121 65hp petrol
engine.
Then in 1959 the model 180b with a M121 68hp engine and the 180Db with a OM636 43hp engine were introduced succeeding the 180a and 180D.
Two
years later in 1961 the 180c M121 68hp model was released with the 180Dc
OM621 48hp diesel model, completing the W120 line of automobiles.
Often referred to as “Ponton’s” these sedans were the current day mainstay of Mercedes’ line along with the more luxurious Mercedes-Benz W128 220SE. Together they constituted an 80% share of Mercedes production between 1953 and 1959.
The W120 180 along with the W121 190, W128, and W180 220-220S-220SE ‘Ponton’ models looked very similar in appearance making it challenging to differentiate them from one another.
The W120 180 and W121 190 sedans with four-cylinders engines were widely used throughout Germany as taxis. These models superseded the W136 and W191 series, with the W110 replacing them at the end of their production run in 1962.
