Series (W109) 1965-1972 Production Models
The
Mercedes-Benz W109 Series 300SEL Models were produced from 1965 through
to 1972. The 109 series superseded the W111 and
W112 series with a total of 383,361 units being
manufactured.
The first W109, (M189 300SEL) was premiered at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1965 (being the big brother to the W108) it featuring an extended wheelbase. By 1967 the M189 engine 300SEL was being retired as the M130 2.8 Liter and M100 6.3 Liter 300SEL models were hitting the market.
Despite
its large size, the 6.3 liter M100 engine 300SEL was stated to accelerate
form 0-62 mph in 6.6 seconds, and had a top speed of 138 mph.
In late 1969, new engine models began with the W109 300SEL 3.5 M116.981 3499 cc V8 motor which producing 200 hp and included Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection pushing it to a top speed of 124 mph, and 0–60 mph in 10 seconds.
Then in spring 1971, the big-block M117.981 4520 cc 225 hp engine was release in the 300SEL 4.5 models that were destined solely for the US market "as the last W109 series variants".
As the last V8 models were released, production began drawing to a close in September 1972 when the 300SEL 3.5 and 6.3 production ended, along with the 300SEL 4.5 a month later, finalizing the W109 series run, making way for the W116 Series.
