M127 Engine Technical Data

The Mercedes-Benz M127 is a six-cylinder petrol engine with mechanical manifold injection.

The M127 engine was derived from the M-180 gasoline engine and had a 2.2 liter displacement but was enlarged to 2.3 liters and equipped with a six-piston injection pump (M 127 II variant) for use in the W113 230SL convertible (Pagoden) sports car.

The Mercedes-Benz M127 engine featured a 6-cylinders inline cast iron engine block with four crankshaft main bearings and cast aluminum cylinder head with overhead camshaft (OHC valve control) including two valves per cylinder. The camshaft drive used a duplex roller timing chain with mechanical Bosch intake manifold fuel injection system.

M127 (2.2 Liter Displacement)

The M127 2.2 liter 2196 cc displacement variant had a bore of 80 mm and stroke of 72.8 mm with a compression ratio of 8.7: 1. Couples with its two-stroke injection pump distributors it produced a maximum output of 115 hp at 4800 rpm (120 hp from August 1959). Maximum torque 186 Nm at 3800 rpm (189 Nm at 3900 rpm from August 1959).

M127 II (2.3 Liter Displacement)

In 1963, the M127 bore was increased by 2 mm to 82 mm with a stroke of 72.8 mm to increased its performance for use in the W113 230SL sports car. This increased the displacement from 2196 to 2306 cc as it was being used with a six-pack injection pump that added to the performance for a compression ratio of 9.3: 1, with maximum 150 hp at 5500 rpm and maximum torque of 196 Nm at 4200 rpm.
