TN / T1 Transport 1977-1995 Production Models

Mercedes T1 TN Transporter 4x4The Mercedes-Benz TN (market name), also known as the T1 (internal designation) began when Mercedes-Benz introduced the new Series TN van/truck (a.k.a. transporter) in 1977. Other designations to follow were series TNN, T1N ("Transporter Neu" / "Transporter 1Neu") and Bremer Transporter. The internal chassis-designations (Baumuster, "BM") are: 601 (2.55-2.8 ton), 602 (3.2-3.5 ton) and 611 (4.6 ton).

The TN Transporter was available as a minibus, or fitted with a cargo box body or cargo flatbed. Additionally, a double cab option was offered for the cargo box and flatbed configurations. The TN/T1 van was also used as a campervan conversion. The best known 4x4 Versions of the TN/T1 were made by fitting parts of the G-Wagen to the TN/T1-chassis. In 1995, after 18 years of production, the TN/T1 van series was discontinued, succeeded by the T1N "Sprinter".

Mercedes T1 TN Transporter TruckThe Mercedes Benz Transporter TN/T1 van model series 207 D, 208, 307 D and 308 body styles of panel van, included different versions of window vans, pickups and pickups with double cabs.

Power outputs for the 4-cylinder M115 petrol and OM616 diesel engines were very good, and low gear ratios also meant they were strong pullers with surprisingly good fuel economy for their large vehicle size and weight.

The original TN line of Transporters debuted in April 1977 with two engines and four weight classes:

  • 207 D with OM616 2404cc 65hp Diesel - gross weight 5,622 lb
  • 208 with M115 2307cc 85hp Petrol - gross weight 6,173 lb
  • 307 D with OM616 2404cc 65hp Diesel - gross weight 7,055 lb
  • 308 with M115 2307cc 85hp Petrol - gross weight 7,716 lb

Mercedes T1 TN Transporter VanIn September 1981 the 407 D, 409 D and 410 were added with a gross weight of 10,141 lb. The 409 D had a more powerful OM617 5-cylinder 2998 cc 87 hp diesel engine.

Other production revisions included the OM616 engine with modified cylinder head and smaller bore lowering capacity from 2404 cc to 2399 cc, producing 71 hp, and 5-speed-gearboxes replacing early 4-speed-versions.

The New TN line debuted in March 1989 with new OM601 and OM602 diesel engines.

  • 208 D, 308, 308 D, 408 D, OM601.940, 2299 cc, 1989-1995
  • 209 D/309 D/409 D, OM602.xxx, 2497 cc, 1989-1993
  • 210 D/310 D/410 D, OM602.940, 2874 cc, 1989-1995

In 1995, after 18 years of production, and 970,000 Bremer Transporters produced, the Mercedes-Benz T1N Sprinter was launched, replacing the TN - T1 Models.
