Series (W460) 1979-1992 Production Models
The Mercedes G-class W460 midsize SUV was first offered as a civilian version in 1979 with two wheelbases: A short wheelbase (SWB) of 2,400 mm, and a long wheelbase (LWB) of 2,850 mm.
A choice of three body styles included: A two-door swb (short wheel base) convertible, a two-door swb wagon, and a lwb (long wheel base) four-door wagon. The Peugeot P4 was a variant made under license in France with a Peugeot engine.
Mercedes
Benz W460 development of the G-Class started in 1972 with a cooperative
agreement between Daimler-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria.
Mercedes-Benz engineers in Stuttgart were in charge of design and testing,
while the team in Graz developed the production plans. In 1974 the first
drivable prototype underwent various testing in German coalfields, the
Sahara Desert, and the Arctic Circle.
Production began as military vehicles with the first civilian G-Class Models being built in Graz in 1979.
The first major refinements were introduced in 1981, including an automatic transmission, air conditioning, an auxiliary fuel tank, protective headlamp grilles and a cable winch. Fuel injection became available in 1982 when the 230 GE was introduced. Other refinements included more comfortable and supportive front seats, auxiliary heating, wider tires and fender flares. For 1985, differential locks, central door locking and a tachometer became standard and by 1986 over 50,000 G Models had been produced.
