Series (W116) 1972-1980 Production Models
The
Mercedes-Benz W116 series flagship luxury sedans were produced from
September 1972 until 1980. They were the first Mercedes-Benz models
to be officially called S-Class, though earlier sedans had been designated
with the letter ‘S’ for Sonderklasse or “special class.”
The History of Mercedes Benz W116 Models began with the M110, M116 and M117 engine models.
Two
M110 models housed different versions of the engine,
the 280S 2746 cc with Solex carburetor, and the 280SE Bosch D-Jetronic
injection model.
V8 models included the 350SE and 350SEL powered by the M116 3499 cc engine, the 450SE and 450SEL powered by the M117 4520 cc engine.
A long-wheelbase version of the 280 was added in 1973 along with the two new 100 mm longer bodied 450 SE and 450 SEL models.
In 1975 another variant of the 450SEL was released with the M100 6.9 liter big-block engine, and in 1977 the 300SD diesel OM617 model was added completing the W116 model line.
The 300 SD sedan (American market only) offered a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-five diesel engine developed from the C111 experimental vehicle.
