Beginning in September 1985 the 280SL was replaced by a new 300SL. The 300 SL was available in the European market 1985 thru 1989.

As for the structure of the car, the chassis for the 300SL, #107.041, carried the model through its production of 13,742 cars.

The power plant, the M103 3.0 Liter Engine that powered the 300SL was an inline 6 cylinder gasoline motor with overhead valves, Engine # M103.982. Mercedes also started producing the M103 3.0 liter inline six cylinder engine in 1985. It powered-up at 177 hp "horsepower", or 132 kW and kilowatt-sat at 5700 rpm.

Production of the 300SL went on in competition with the 420SL that was produced during the same years.
