Type 170 V (W136) 1936-1955 Production Models
The
Mercedes-Benz W136 Series included a line of inline-four cylinder automobiles
from the mid-1930s into the 1950s. The 1.7 liter four cylinder rear
wheel-drive 170V (W136) was introduced in 1936 to replace the 1.7 liter
six-cylinde W15 Type 170.
Between 1936 and 1942 over 75,000 were built, and enough of the W136's tooling survived World War II to rebuild the company. By 1947 the model 170 V had resumed its place as Mercedes' top-seller, a position it held until 1953.
The
range of different body types offered in the 1930s for the W136 170
V was unusually broad and including a two-door two-seat roadster, two-seat
"Cabriolet A", two-door four-seat "Cabriolet B", four-door "Cabrio-Limousine,
four-door sedan, wagons, delivery vans and trucks with loading platforms
or box bodies, ambulances, patrol cars, etc. The four door models were
quickly adapted for taxi work, with large luggage racks at the back.
Post-war
production at Mercedes-Benz began in May 1946 several body types including
small platform and box trucks, and in 1947 the 170 V sedan, in May 1949
a 170 D diesel variant with the OM 636 engine, a four-door sedan, and
an open variant which was used by officials for open touring police
cars, abbreviated "OTP".
Almost 140,000 Mercedes-Benz 170 V and 34,000 of the 170 D were produced overall.
Superstructures consisted of a wooden frame with sheet steel cladding until July 1947 when all-steel construction was adapted reducing the choices of body styles. Overall production volumes for the popular 170 included:
- 1935–1942 75,006 units, pre-war
- 1947–1955 83,190 units, post war
Production Statistics
In 1936, in parallel to the classic front-engine Mercedes-Benz 170 V ("V" for "Vorn" front) Daimler-Benz AG introduced the Mercedes-Benz 170 H ("H" for "Heck", rear) which had the same engine as the 170 V, however with the rear engine architecture derived from the 130, (its predecessor). It stood in direct competition to the VW Beetle.
