Series (W126) 1979-1991 Production Models
The
Mercedes-Benz W126 Series premiered in September 1979 a line of S-Class
automobiles that were manufactured between 1979 and 1991.
The W126 series succeeded the W116 series as the second generation to officially bare the prestigious S-Class designation, an abbreviation for German Sonderklasse or “special class” that were luxury vehicles offered with a 6-cylinder, V8 or turbocharged diesel engine model choices.
The
126 S-Class sedans were manufactured in two wheelbase lengths to cover
a range of variants (standard "SWB" (115.6 in), and long "LWB" (121.1
in).
These 126 sedans/saloons were produced from 1979-1981, with a coupe variant C126 2-door version being introduced in September 1981, and produced until 1990. Mercedes introduced the 2-door C126 coupe model with the SEC designation. This generation was the first S-Class to have separate chassis codes for standard W126 and long V126 wheelbases, with C126 used for coupe.
Over the 12-year 126 series production run, 818,063 sedans/saloons were produced along with 74,060 coupes., totaling 892,123 units which made it the most successful and longest production run for S-Class to date. The W126 line was revised with the "Second Series" model range being introduced in 1985, which ran until being superseded in 1991 by the Mercedes-Benz W140 sedans and C140 coupe's.
