722.8 Automatic Transmission Technical Data
Mercedes Benz 722.8 WFC280 7-speed CVT (continuous variable transmission)
The CVT Autotronic 722.8 Mercedes gearbox version is based on the type of engine associated with it. The Autotronic 722.800 is for diesel engines, and the Autotronic 722.801 is for petrol engines. This type of gearbox is installed on Class A and Class B Mercedes vehicles, including Class A W169 Class B W245.
The design of this CVT is based on model patent CVT with a "push" belt produced by Bosch-Fondorn and the belt itself. It is a competitor of a Japanese CVT JF011E
The CVT gearbox adopts the operating logic and ability to vary continuously thanks to two pulleys of variable width, connected with a metal belt with plugs.

The
individual pulleys are constituted by two coaxial (half-pulley) coaxial
discs, one of which is fixed and the other mobile. It is the sliding
of the movable one with respect to the fixed one that varies the diameter
of the pulleys. When the half-pulleys are at the maximum distance from
each other, the diameter is minimum, when the half-pulleys approach
each other by closing the gap between, the belt is forced out and the
diameter increases.
The approach of one disc with respect to the other is caused by the increase in the oil pressure inside the compression chambers. As the pressure on the pair of primary discs increases, the pressure on the pair of secondary discs decreases. A spring is installed on the movable disk of the drive pulley, which is able to supply the necessary pressure to the metal belt even when the gearbox is without pressure.

The gearbox is managed by an integrated electronic control unit that performs the following functions:

Monitor
the oil temperature. - Analyze the rpm of the input and output shafts.
- Management of solenoid valves for clutch control.
- Management of solenoid valve for clutch exclusion, torque converter.
- Main pressure monitoring.
- Analysis of the commands received from the selector lever.
The gearbox software integrates two driving programs, sport S and comfort C. Self-adapting function to the driver's style.
Kick-Down function: Manual control function is enabled with activation on the +/- touch selector lever. To obtain the correct functioning of this type of gearbox, it is essential that the oil is of the right quality and its level is always sufficient to be able to reach the correct pressure level within all the plumbing of the system. The oil pump which takes motion from the crankshaft, works between 4.5 and 67 bar.
3 Hydraulic distributor
The
hydraulic distributor (valve body) contains the entire circuit for all
components that use oil under pressure. Two or more superimposed blocks
hydraulically connect the mechanical valves and management solenoid
valves via ducts.
When the CVT control unit detects anomalies within the system, it adopts the recovery strategy, during which the transmission ratio is adjusted based on engine revs, and the torque converter exclusion clutch is disconnected and oil pressure can increase to where the pressure regulation valve is de-energized.
As soon as the CVT control unit activates emergency operation, it communicates it to the engine control unit via the CAN line triggering fault codes to be generated.
