Series (W164) 2006-2012 Production Models
The
Mercedes-Benz W164 M-Class was introduced in 2005 to replaced the body-on-frame
W163 M-Class for the 2006 model year.
The redesigned M-class (chassis W164) offered a lot of improvements
from its predecessor the 163 series, and used a uni-body SUV construction
with this M-Class design being named "Best New Sport Utility Vehicle"
in the 2006.
Mercedes-Benz
extensively publicized the US $600 million that was spent to update
their factory and add additional manufacturing space for the new models.
According to early automotive press reports, the 2006 M-Class vehicles
demonstrate vast improvements in build quality.
Mercedes W164 ML63 AMG
The AMG ML63 W164 version was introduced at the 2006 North American International Auto Show as a limited edition 2007 model.
It features a 6.2 L V8 naturally aspirated engine producing 510 hp and 465 ft·lb of torque, enough torque and horsepower to rocket from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.8 seconds. Mercedes-Benz's 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission was standard in the W164 ML63 AMG.
