(W163) 1998-2005 Production Models

The Mercedes-Benz W163 series M-Class SUV was introduced in 1997 for the 1998 model year. It is a midsized body-on-frame truck with seating for 5, or 7 with an optional third-row seat. The W163 was replaced by the unibody W164 M-Class for 2006. The 163 ML Class SUV was released in the US as a 1998 ML320. Later, in 1999 a ML430 V8 option became available with the familiar Mercedes-Benz 4.3 Liter V8 under the hood. Navigation was added as an option in the model year 2001.

The W163 M-Class was available with permanent 4Matic four-wheel drive using a two-speed dual range BorgWarner 4409 transfer case, and Mercedes' new Four-wheel Electronic Traction System (4-ETS).

Mercedes-Benz revised and updated the W163 for the 2002 model year which included new head- and tail-lamp lenses, front and rear bumpers, new alloy wheels, relocation of the turn signals from fenders to side-view mirrors, and interior trim changes. The ML 430 was also supeceded by the 5.0-litre V8-powered ML 500. A new 4.0-litre V8 turbodiesel ML 400 CDI also became available in Europe. Shortly after that, Mercedes launched the ML 350 fitted with a 3.7-litre V6 engine which replaced the ML 320 in some markets, and supplemented it in others. Later an AMG ML55 version was also added to the line.
