(W140) 1991-1998 Production Models

The W140 Mercedes-Benz S-Class was introduced in 1991 and produced up until 1998. In 1994 it received a facelift with added features introduced for the first time in the automobile industry.

It made its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1991, and release in North American on August 6, 1991. Production models included: 300 SE, S 320 SWB, S 320 LWB, 400 SE, 400 SEL, S 420, 500 SEL, S 500, 600 SEL, S 600, 300 SD, S 350, 500 SEC, S 500 Coupe, 600 SEC, S 600 Coupe, CL 500, CL 600.

Like its predecessor, the W140 was available in two wheelbase lengths (short W140 and long V140) along with the C140 coupe. In 1991, a new M120 6 liter 402 horsepower V12 engine joined the lineup for the first time with the 600 SEL and 600 SEC.

Short (SE) and long (SEL) wheelbase sedans were offered initially, as well as the C140 fuel injection coupe body style in October 1992.

As with its predecessor, the W140 was the "next generation" of Mercedes-Benz models to feature the company's new design theme. This design was adopted for the new C-Class in 1989 and during 1991 for use on the face-lifted W124 in 1993.

The W140 is significantly larger than its predecessor and came loaded with technical innovation. It wasn't initially admired but over the years it has evolved into a desirable classic. The three phases of W140 production included phase 1 from 1991-1994, phase 2 from 1994-1996, and phase 3 from 1997 to 1998.

Like previous generations of the S-Class, the W140 introduced many new features and innovations. There were so many new innovations on the W140 that it was often considered to be over-engineered with creative features.

W140 Transmission Manuals

W140s were supplied with three different types of gearbox: A five speed manual, the 722.3 four speed automatic to 1996, and the 722.6 five-speed automatic from 1996 onwards. The manual is rare and was fitted only to the S280 – the gearbox was shared with the W124 and is a robust gearbox.
