Series (W129) 1988-2001 Production Models
The
Mercedes-Benz SL-Class R129 Roadster models were a vehicle line that
was manufactured from 1988 through 2001 and sold throughout international
markets.
The R129 SL roadster style design replaced the widely successful two decade run Mercedes R107, C107 line in 1989, and was later replaced by the R230 SL-Class in 2002 for the 2003 model year.
Produced
as a two-seat two-door roadster, it offered an automated (electro-hydraulic),
collapsible textile roof, that included a hard shell, color-matched,
tonneau cover. The R129 models came standard with an aluminum manually
fitted and detachable hardtop.
Beginning in the 1994 model year, the R129 line was re-named adding the SL designation before the size, ie. (SL500 vs 500SL).
Not all engines were offered in North America. North America R129 models included: 300SL, 300SL-24, SL280, SL320, SL320 V6, 500SL, SL 500, 600SL, SL 600, SL60 AMG
Special edition AMG offerings were available in several variants, and are sought after by enthusiasts and collectors alike, including: 1995-1998 SL 60 AMG, 1999 SL 73 AMG, 500 SL AMG 6.0 of 1991, and the highly sought after SL 72 AMG 1995, offering the most powerful V12 engine ever put into an SL up to that time with 510 PS (375 kW; 503 hp).
