OM642 Engine Technical Data
The Mercedes-Benz OM642 engine is a 3.0 liter (2,987 cc) 182.3 cubic inch, 24-valve 72° V6 diesel motor produced from 2005 - on.
The
OM642 engine features an aluminum block and heads with common rail direct
injection by piezo injectors each with eight injection nozzles, a variable
geometry turbocharger (VGT or variable nozzle turbine, VNT), and double
overhead camshafts with duplex chain drive. It features a counter-rotating
balance shaft between the cylinder banks to cancel vibrations inherent
to the 72 degree V6 design. The crankpins are offset by 48 degrees to
achieve even 120 degree firing intervals. Power output is 221 hp and
376 lb.ft of torque. For the 2007 model year, torque was increased to
(398 lb.ft). Engine weight is 459 lb. The injection system operates
at 23,000 psi, while the compression ratio is 18.0:1.

In some OM642 heavy vehicle applications, Mercedes' BlueTec AdBlue urea injection is utilized for NOx reduction. In lighter vehicle applications, a NOx storage catalyst captures nitrous oxides which are periodically purged by running the engine slightly rich. A particulate filter lowers soot, making the engine ULEV certified.
