MBE 4000 Engine Technical Data
The Mercedes-Benz MBE 4000 was launched at the Mid-America Trucking Show in March 2000 and first delivered in November of that year. It was developed specifically for Freightliner but has a rather European personality. It’s part of the Detroit Diesel family. The MBE 4000 got a bit of a leg up on the market at its introduction as it didn’t have to comply with the EPA’s October 2002 emissions deadline. According to the so-called ‘consent decree’ in 1998, domestic engine makers reluctantly agreed to push the ’04 emissions requirements ahead 14 months. They had to have ’04- compliant engines on the street by October 2002, but since the MBE 4000 wasn’t here in 1998, it wasn’t included in the agreement, meaning it didn’t have to comply until January 2004.
The MBE 4000: Detroit Leverages Daimler Engines
The MBE 4000 is a Mercedes-Benz designed engine customized for North American Use. For improved vehicle control and maximum service brake life, the MBE 4000 includes the MBE compression brake and exhaust brake combination as standard features. With the addition of an optional turbo brake, the MBE 4000 provides the most braking horsepower in its class.
Features
- High torque at low RPM means excellent acceleration, outstanding grade-ability, reduced shifting
- A high-output turbocharger perfectly matched to high-pressure injectors for excellent drivability
- Outstanding fuel economy and low emissions without the need for after-treatment devices
Every new MBE 4000 is covered by standard warranties:
- Engine: 2 years, unlimited miles, including 100% parts and labor
- Accessories: 2 years, 100,000 miles, including parts and labor
- Major Components: 5 years, 500,000 miles, including 100% parts and 100% of service outlet’s normal charge
Modifications
The MBE 900 and MBE 4000 Engines were redeveloped for 2007
With a full range of horsepower/options available in low-emissions engines for medium- and heavy-duty applications, Detroit Diesel Corporation’s MBE 900 and MBE 4000 diesel engines continue to offer customers the power, durability and performance they’re accustomed to while meeting 2007 emissions standards.
New 2007 emissions standards require engine makers to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by more than 50 percent and particulate matter emissions by 90 percent for all on-highway diesel engines. These changes prompted the use of specially formulated engine oil and lower-sulfur diesel fuel.
Redevelopment of these engines began in 2003, and refinements to the MBE 4000 include:
- New torque ratings along its power range which runs from 350 to 450 hp with 1250 to 1650 lb.-ft. torque. The MBE 4000 can now be specified with 370 hp with 1250 lb.-ft. torque. For customers with weight sensitive applications, the MBE 4000 now offers 450 hp rating with 1650 lb.-ft. torque.
- The MBE 4000 comes with a standard engine brake that provides up to 370 braking horsepower. A premium engine brake option is available with up to 580 braking horsepower.
- The MBE 4000, offers the best power-to-weight ratio in its class and is ideal for many vocational applications, such as regional distribution, vocational and bulk hauling.
Both the MBE 900 and MBE 4000 engines use the DDEC VI electronic control unit and after-treatment technology to meet 2007 emissions standards. They use optimized EGR to treat NOx and an Aftertreatment System to reduce particulate matter emissions. They also feature an electrostatic breather to address crankcase emissions requirements. This device takes oil out of crankcase vapors and returns it to the crankcase.
Additionally, these engines use a new fuel system with multi-injection capability. The system helps meet emissions targets while maximizing fuel economy and performance. The new fuel system also enables the MBE 900 and MBE 4000 to run smoother and improves the overall sound quality of the engines.
Detroit Diesel is a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler and part of the Freightliner group of companies.
