Use Careful Consideration Buying a M189

Oil pumps on the M189 have somewhat of a history for oil supply problems, oil volume could fall away although the gauge may still be indicating full pressure.

The M189 engine is the first Mercedes production aluminum engine, and special cylinder liners can move if proper procedures aren't followed when heating and cooling the block casting correctly. This could allow the sleeves to move if the lock bores are stretched.

The third special consideration is corrosion of the engine block steel heat exchanger plate on the left side of the engine. Originally, this plate was coated in a heavy wax to protect it from engine coolant, but over time (and lack of coolant maintenance), this wax coating deteriorates exposing the steel to rust and flake off with these particles landing on the aluminum block below and iron in direct contact with aluminum causes corrosion.
