722.5 Automatic Transmission Technical Data

Mercedes 722.5 Automatic Transmission CutawayMercedes introduced the five speed automatic overdrive transmission in the 1989 model year and 1990 began seeing its installation in various Mercedes vehicles. At a quick glance it looks the same as the four speed 722.3 and 722.4 models, however, the extension housing is the quickest way to identify the five speed unit, as this is where the overdrive section was added to the back of the case in a separate section. The 4-5 and the 5-4 shifts are controlled by a computer module.

The predecessor 4G-Tronic was used until mid-1996 in some vehicles when it was replaced by the Mercedes-Benz 722.5 transmission. This was in turn replaced with the more modern 5G-Tronic (722.6) transmission that features a torque converter lockup and fully electronic control.
