M198 Engine Technical Data

The 300SL gullwing coupé and its roadster counterpart featured the M198 Bosch mechanical direct injected high-performance dry sump version of the M186 engine which made its debut in 1954. It produced 215 PS (158 kW; 212 hp) DIN net at 5,800 rpm and 275 Nm (203 lb-ft) DIN net of torque at 4,600 rpm and though another source cites power as 223 PS (164 kW; 220 hp), and 243 PS (179 kW; 240 hp) with an optional high-performance "Sport" camshaft, the only configuration available for the roadster.

The M198 engine was first produced as a Coupe from 1954 to 1957 with gullwing doors and then from 1957 to 1963 for the 300SL Roadster. The 300 refers to its M198 engine displacement of 3.0 liter or more specifically 2,996 cc (182.8 cu in).

Like the W194, the 300 SL borrowed the basic M186 engine from the four-door 300 (W186 "Adenauer"). It featured an innovative diagonal SOHC aluminum head, big valves, generous 2.6 gallon oil capacity, and came with the latest Bosch first mechanical direct fuel injection system originally designed for Daimler-Benz's liquid-cooled inverted V12. Compression was set at 8.55: 1 for the Coupe and 9.5:1 for the Roadster. The M198 3.0 was connected four-speed, and performed well at 220 hp (164 kW).
